The Nuestra Senora de Atocha ("Our Lady of Atocha" - named for the Atocha parish in Madrid, Spain) was one of a fleet of Spanish ships that sunk off the Florida Keys in 1622 while carrying a cargo of treasure to Spain.
The Atocha was a Spanish galleon providing escort to the Tierra Firme Fleet (a treasure fleet that sailed from Spain to the New World and back again). She was a heavily armed warship with numerous cannons and a company of infantrymen aboard to protect the fleet against attacks from pirates. Because she was so well protected, the Atocha carried many VIPs and royal passengers as well as a large amount of the Fleet's treasure. Unfortunately, her firepower could not protect her from the wrath of a hurricane. On September 4, 1622 a powerful hurricane smashed the Atocha against the coral reefs west of Key West, FL. Of her 270 passengers and crew, only 5 survived. Four other ships of the Tierra Firme Fleet were also sunk by the hurricane.
Salvage efforts began immediately but were largely unsuccessful. The Atocha's treasure of gold, silver and jewels lay lost beneath the sea for well over 300 years, until her wreckage was discovered by Mel Fisher in July of 1985 after a sixteen year search. Our authentically designed jewelry has been crafted using actual Atocha treasure silver bullion lost beneath the ocean for 363 years, making these pieces unique, valuable and historically significant!

Another US Wings exclusive! Hand cast from Atocha's silver cargo, this treasure tag features a re-cast coin from the lost fleet of 1715 which sank in a raging hurricane off Florida's east coast. This 4 Reale coin represented about half a month's pay for an on-board military sailor. Lions, castles and the Crusader's emblem or Cross are captured and prominently defined on the piece. "1715 Fleet" is inscribed on the front, while the reverse features the Atocha Treasure mark. Although the tag is built "battleworthy" for the brawny and brave, we strongly caution against its use on sailing ships in hurricanes. Looks great on both men and women.
